Team Toeniskoetter was out in force for the Stroke Awareness Foundation’s 8th Annual Fight Stroke Walk on May 5th.  About 40 employees, friends, and family members joined nearly 900 others for the 5K walk featuring music, activities for the kids, and a post-event lunch. The gorgeous Cinco de Mayo morning turned out to be a good omen -- the Walk was the most successful ever both in number of participants and money raised.

This year’s Walk was preceded by a special honor.  On April 30th, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, along with City Councilmembers Pam Foley and Dev Davis, presented the Stroke Awareness Foundation with a Proclamation honoring its work and designating May as Stroke Awareness Month.

The Stroke Awareness Foundation was launched in 2002 by Chuck Toeniskoetter, himself a stroke survivor, along with the late former City Councilwoman Pat Dando and Chuck Hoffman. Its goal was simple: save lives and improve outcomes for stroke victims.  In the years since, the Foundation has been instrumental in helping local hospitals become Certified Stroke Centers and ensuring that emergency medical responders transport stroke victims directly to these centers.  There is also a Stroke Foundation app, which helps you quickly identify stroke signs, locates the nearest Certified Stroke Center, and calls 911 while texting your location to your emergency contacts.

Think you or someone you know may be having a stroke? Think FAST:

  • Face -- does one side of the face droop?
  • Arm -- is one arm or leg weak or numb?
  • Speech -- is speech slurred or strange?
  • Time -- call 911 immediately!
For more information, visit the Stroke Foundation at www.strokeinfo.org. Join Team Toeniskoetter for next year’s Fight Stroke Walk, scheduled for Sunday, May 3, 2020.
